Nina Simone
Many know Nina Simone as the famous voice behind the classic tune, “Feelin’ Good.” Though, there is far more to her than meets the eye. Nina Simone was a singer, author, women’s rights leader, and civil rights activist. Simone wrote the soundtrack for the entire Civil Rights Movement, many say. Nina Simone’s controversial lyrics were her way to protest a white-dominated society and the injustices of African Americans.
I designed my placemat to have a shimmery purple background color because it reminds me of velvet and a lot of people describe Nina Simone’s voice as velvet. I added the black lace pattern on top to add some femininity to it, since after all Simone supported women’s rights. I decorated the placemat and plate with diamonds and pearls because Nina Simone often dressed herself in those and she was very glamourous in that way, she was a performer. I
added the piano to the center of the plate because that was the main instrument of her performances and she hardly ever sang without it, she was a gifted pianist.
She also wrote her own songs so I put music books and music notes on there as well. I chose a black, white, and silver theme because I thought it was elegant and represented Simone’s style very well. Finally, the feathers represent two things, they represent Simone’s fun and quirky spirit and her overall diva persona as well as a bird. Simone often references birds in her songs, especially in the song “Feelin’ Good.”
