Harriet Tubman
Harriet Tubman embodies what it means to be heroic. She was known as Moses, bringing her people to safety which is why the terms “exodus 2” and “let my people go” are featured on the plate. Exodus 2 is the Bible verse that features the story of Moses. Also, the river towards the right side of the plate represents both the Mississippi River of the South and the Red Sea in the story of Moses with the reeds at the bottom of the river. Next to the reeds, I included cotton plants to represent what the enslaved people were working for and is shown as a comparison to the reeds of Egypt.
I wanted to also represent the contribution Harriet Tubman made as a Union Spy on the plate. In the middle of the plate you can see a collection of Union tents with fires. You can also see to Union boats in that section. Tubman, as a Union Spy, sailed near the Gulf of Mexico freeing the slaves on the plantations. You can also see that history through the map of the United States located on the plate. The red states were states of the Southern Confederacy and the blue states are states of the Northern Union. The light blue states are states in between that weren’t fully on either side.
Above that map you can see a Canadian flag which represents the ultimate goal of Tubman to travel with her freed people to Canada in the North where they would be the safest from persecution and recapture. You can also see there is an inclusion of a compass and the light of yellow below Canada to represent that freedom as well as the light left by the safehouses in the Underground Railroad. There is also the addition of a actual house to symbolize these safehouses. Finally, the black lines represent the routes that were used to reach the ultimate goal of canada. The green represents the shrubbery throughout the route and the plate itself is a representation of the conditions in which these people were traveling, through the dead of night in forests to cover themselves from possible capturers.
I think this really represents Harriet Tubman's life journey.
